interactive whiteboard in the science world

First things first....what is interactive whiteboard (IWB)... it is an instructional tool that allows computor images to be displayed onto a board by the use of a digital projector. The cool thing about IWB is that the instructor can manipulate the elements on the board with his FINGER....who needs a mouse?? ....pffft not me.
This powerfull tool allow interactivity and colloboration in classrooms and add a wide range of learning oppertunities.
While some learners absorb information efficiently through spoken word, others are visual learners. This will give people the oppertunity to absorb info in multiple formats.
While notes can be saved and printed, students do not have to write things down. Which allows them to participate in the learning session.

Using IWB in natural sciences will be buckets of fun. While students needed alot of imagination and lenghty verbal explanations to understand concept like cell funtions, they can now literally look inside a kidney, take it apart, magnify its cross sections and explore other body parts.... all thanks to IWB.

imagine being in control of the future generations brain...well you are

'Create an enviroment of open communication'
' i encourage honest, fearless contemplation on what is and what is not working in the classroom'

Sound pretty easy right??
I grew up in an enviroment where teaching has became such a degrading profession of teachers parrot feeding info to leaners.... are we as future teachers ok with that?

As educators we touch so many lives on a daily bases that we need to start creating positive relationships with learners inside the guidelines of the law. We need to make them feel safe and comfortable in an enviroment where they are not just being spoon fed but where they are heard and where their opinion matter.

Teachers need to focus less on what they need to learn and more on their ability to learn. The different types of learners need to be identified and their needs should be met during class.

According to video by Foley, teachers should focus more on the wellness of the learners as a whole being. This means the teachers should be accesible and available not only for classroom related matters but personal and social issues aswell.

Sometimes learners just need someone to not judge them on every single thing they do....consider the article ' applying mindfullness to Mundane classroom tasks'. Educators needs to change the classrooms dynamic to a more comfortable and learning enviroment. Learning will not be done in a stressfull enviroment.

(Im so tired)
 we need to change this!!!!

dont judge the way i learn

While doing my undergrad, I missed more classes than I attended. Knowing my lectures name or surname was only important when i needed to email him/her. From the get go of University, I felt lost in such a big group and large venues and the only time I was seen in a class was when I had to since a list.
This type of learning made me a much more independent learner and increased my work ethic. I slept until I was no longer tired, worked when i felt like it, did what i liked. I didnt waste my time in a boring class. What other learners didnt understand was, even though i didnt work like they did, i still covered all the material. This type of learning moulded me into a more effective person ( well, i thought i was more effective).  Doing my work in this way did not deprive me from the fundamentals, but enhanced it. By being allowed to indulge the material in ways I felt comfortable, i enjoyed education more.
As seen in The Independent Project, the combination of technology and distance learning, delivered excellent results. Through self motivation and the input from learners across the globe, learning took place. So much communication takes place through technology, why deprive education from this benefit? Tech based distance self study has the potential to create a platform where learners feel motivated and show interest in the material.

Even though a lot of critic will arise with this type of learning, one should establish which learning enviroment suits the learner. Some learners are better of alone while other depend on the classroom while absorbing the information from the teacher.

( i go to class now...every single one of them.... i just love seeing my lectures.... and classmates....ooo and i love the education buildings vending machine....it never steals my money....)

teaching the future

Ok...its the 21st century..that should be enough reason to step away from the anti-social media cray-cray ( and so many other things). If you are going to ignore how social media is spreading like a wild fire you might as well go teach the flintstones. Technology is taking over and this skill can/should be used to your benefit and who else to teach the future generation than you....yes you. By teaching them how to use social media, you are giving them a handy tool to rise above.

Before forcing your learners to start blogging and tweeting ( you know who im talking too....ok im sorry....dont fail me 😐) remember that this could become a distraction from what is being said in class (believe me).

Davids (2014) mentioned how social media can be a handy tool to make learners engage in class. While i agree with this statements, i find that one should set clear boundaries before overstepping boundaries as a teacher.

As a natural science teacher, I think instagram would be an useful tool to let the learners show me and each other what they find intersting in nature and other science related things they come across.

digital pedagogy and LMS

The term digital pedagogy is being thrown around and its is clear that it is highly misunderstood. By putting a lesson online, it does not qualify as pedagogy. A teacher that understands and embraces pedagogy, knows that it is where philosophy and practice finds ways to interact. It is the exchange of information so that learning can happen, not limit to a classroom or even a certain number of people.

According to the article, LMS are limited and they control how online teaching takes place. It created learning that took place behind a screen and learners' knowledge are tested through online quizzes. LMS  settled for less innovative way of teaching and gave the illusion that online teaching was better and simpler.

My solution between LMS and pedagogy is to create proper digital education. It should motivate teachers to find creative ways to use pedadagy without eliminating the personal interaction in classrooms.

my more professional opinion on Fyfe (2011)

I recently lost my phone and was introduced to a world where i felt like I was stranded on a island and didnt even know how to make a fire. That was my first thought on the word unplugged. What does it actually mean?? What does digital pedagogy unplugged mean?? How are we as teachers suppose to balance a technology wired world while still being "present" in classroom?

Topics like this always have my head in a spin as it can go from 0-100 real quick if its not done the right way....so here is my piece on the issue....

Teaching is a hands on profession. Its really not that difficult to understand that. Therefore relying toooo much on electronic tools you might miss out on the personal interaction, the telling of stories, the engaging with your student and most importantly...the learning from each other.

Fyfe (2011) spoke about how important "teaching naked" is, where you spend most of the time engaging in class, but use podcast/youtube videos to assist after class....  Personally I think "teaching naked" is somewhat to dramatic. Times are moving at a rapid pace and you have to adapt or be left behind. Whether we like it or not, if we continue teaching like they did 60 years ago, the students will continue staring at a screen and we will lose them. We have to emplement clear guidelines in order to further technology in teaching. The use of social media and technology can be use to our advantage. We kinda still think like teenager (or i do) so why not brain storm on what will work for us and just use it in your own classroom???
